COLLINGWOOD’S Sophie Casey has been handed a suspension for an illegal knockout blow to Melbourne’s Meg Downie.

Downie spent the night in hospital after she was knocked out during Saturday night’s 19-point win over Collingwood and released early yesterday morning after she was cleared of serious damage.

Casey was reported on the spot and the match review panel today offering the 26-year-old a two-match penalty after it deemed the action to be “engaging in rough conduct after making careless conduct with high impact to the head”.
“After speaking to the umpire who made a report on match-day, and based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with high impact to the head,” the MRP stated.
Casey risks an extra week on the sidelines should she elect to challenge the ban at the AFLW Tribunal tomorrow night.
She has until 11am tomorrow to decide whether to challenge.
Bulldog Laura Bailey, who was reported in Friday night’s loss to Adelaide, can accept a one-game ban with an early guilty plea after engaging in rough conduct with Crow Courtney Cramey.
Teammate Hannah Scott had been reported for front-on-contact but was cleared, as was Blue Brianna Davey for her tackle on Giant Jess Dal Pos.
