AFLW boss Emma Moore on why 2024 season will be the league’s best yet

New AFLW boss Emma Moore has hailed the arrival of the new season and declared she will be “working tirelessly” to make 2024 the best year yet.

The 2024 AFLW season is almost upon us and as we enter the ninth season of the competition and my first as general manager, I can’t wait for the action to kick-off at North Sydney Oval tomorrow night.

Clubs have been working hard throughout the pre-season, and we at AFL House have been doing the same. We’re ready.

Coming off a strong 2023 season with record finals attendances, scoring and membership, we’re poised for continued growth.

The players and the AFL are aligned to reach the targets set out in the CBA, and I’ll be working tirelessly with the everyone in the industry to make this happen.

Our game is in great shape, both on and off the field. On the field, the Brisbane Lions, led by Craig Starcevich and Bre Koenen, are aiming to defend their premiership title – a feat no other club has achieved in the AFLW.

Mon Conti, the league’s reigning MVP, will be looking to guide the Tigers back to the finals, and trailblazer Daisy Pearce will take the reins as West Coast’s coach. The introduction of ‘Score Assist’ ball tech is incredibly exciting and will enhance decision-making in the competition.

There has also been a 30 per cent rise in female umpires nationwide and a record number of female coaches in the 2024 AFLW season. Off the field, fans will once again flock to historic heartland venues such as Henson Park, Windy Hill, RSEA Park, and Whitten Oval – some of the best places to watch footy.

Participation in our game has reached a record high with more than 540,000 registered players, driven by significant growth in women and girls. Females now represent over 20 per cent of all participants, with girls making up nearly one-third of Auskick’s 129,000 players.

It all kicks off this weekend with a bumper round one fixture, including the Swans-Collingwood opener, West Coast’s debut under Pearce, and a Grand Final rematch between Brisbane and North Melbourne.

We’ve also got the South Australian Showdown at Alberton Oval, Melbourne against the Cats down at GMHBA Stadium, and Essendon facing Fremantle at Windy Hill.
