AFL Trades 2019: Hugh Greenwood Gold Coast move, Brad Crouch request

Adelaide’s off-season nightmare has hit a new low with a suggestion star brothers Brad and Matt Crouch could both bolt to a rival club.

Adelaide is looking at a Trade Period bloodbath next week with up to 10 star players all looking for a new home.

The Crows’ exodus hit a new low on Monday when it was suggested star ball-winner Brad Crouch could dramatically approach the Gold Coast Suns with a suggestion to chase star brother Matt Crouch this trade period.

Brad Crouch and his management are reportedly pursuing a five-year-deal worth up to $5 million — and has been strongly linked to a move to the Gold Coast Suns.

Crouch remains contracted until the end of the 2020 season, allowing the Crows to hold him to his deal or to play hard ball in any trade negotiations.

However, there has been little progress made, according to reports, in Crouch’s demand for a new contract to be sorted before the start of the 2020 season.

AFL reporter Damian Barrett on Monday told Trade Radio he has heard word that Matt Crouch could also become linked with brother Brad’s possible Gold Coast move.

Brad Crouch is pushing a two-for-one.

Barrett said he would not be surprised if Brad Crouch told the Suns of his desire for them to chase his brother.

Matt Crouch, a former All Australia, remains contracted at the Crows until the end of 2021.

“I have heard it, that if it was the Suns they might (go after Matt Crouch),” Barrett said.

“It might even be Brad who suggests it. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if his name (Matt Crouch) was to also become part of whatever is being discussed around Brad.”

The Crows are also likely to farewell Eddie Betts (Carlton), Sam Jacobs (GWS), Hugh Greenwood (Gold Coast), Brodie Smith (Brisbane) and Cam Ellis-Yolmen (Brisbane) this trade period.

Meanwhile star defender Alex Keath has nominated the Western Bulldogs as his preferred trade destination, out of favour tall Josh Jenkins is reportedly prepared to take a pay cut to play for the Cats or Bombers and Rory Laird is also considering a move, according to reports.

TIM KELLY KEY DOMINO TO FALL

Richmond’s premiership celebrations will still be in full swing on Monday but the focus for AFL clubs will quickly switch to the looming free agency and trade periods where Geelong’s Tim Kelly and Adelaide duo Josh Jenkins and Alex Keath are among the stars on the move.

Kelly is set to inform the Cats this week that he wants a trade to West Coast where his young family will have a strong support network in his native Western Australia.

After earning All Australian honours in his second year at the Cattery, coach Chris Scott has made it clear his club will demand a high price for the uncontracted midfielder, with any protracted negotiations likely to hold up other trades.

The Crows loom as major players in the trade period that starts on Monday October 7, with the free agency window to open three days earlier on Friday, October 4.

Jenkins has already said that he wants to play anywhere but Adelaide, where he still has two years left to run on a contract.

Tim Kelly will leave Geelong.

Keath, who has become one of the league’s top intercept defenders, has informed the club he would like to be traded to the Western Bulldogs where it is believed a lucrative four-year deal awaits the 27-year-old.

Ruckman Sam Jacobs is set to take up a two-year offer to join GWS, while much- loved goal sneak Eddie Betts is mooted to be looking for a switch back to Carlton.

Hugh Greenwood and Cameron Ellis-Yolmen could also be on their way out of the club that crashed out of the finals for a second year after their 2017 grand final disaster against the Tigers.

The Blues are understood to be the preferred destination of Gold Coast star Jack Martin, with Sydney’s Tom Papley also on their radar.

With his close ties to the Swans, speculation has continued over Joe Daniher’s future at Essendon, but the club’s best-and-fairest count on Tuesday evening could offer more certainty about his plans.

St Kilda will also be key players, with Josh Bruce looking for a move to the Bulldogs, while Jack Steven could look for a fresh start at Geelong.

Fremantle star Brad Hill has already nominated the Saints as his club of choice, as has Port Adelaide veteran Paddy Ryder.

Two-time Richmond free agent Brandon Ellis is believed to be on the verge of signing a long-term deal to join the Suns.

PAPLEY KNOCKS BACK NORTH

Swans star Tom Papley has reportedly knocked back North Melbourne’s monster contract offer, reported to be worth up to $900,000 per season.

Contracted at the Swans until the end of the 2021 season and with a further contract clause in his favour to extend his deal through to the end of 2023, Papley on grand final weekend reportedly informed the Swans he wants to be traded to Carlton.

The in-form goal sneak has emerged as one of the most intriguing storylines of the 2019 trade period after Sydney’s repeated declarations it intends to hold onto the 23-year-old.

Papley has also previously been linked as a potential circuit-breaker in a three-way trade involving Essendon and Joe Daniher’s speculated move to the Swans.

SEN’s Sam McClure reported Papley’s update on Monday morning, claiming the Blues could be forced to hand over Pick No. 8 to the Swans to get the deal done.

Saints great Nick Dal Santo said of North’s reported monster offer to Papley: “World’s gone mad. He’s a very good player, but that’s a lot of money”.
