AFL teams: Selection news and all the ins and outs for Round 13
Collingwood will deploy its trio of big men for the first time in the same side as it aims to stretch North Melbourne in a must-win match for its finals aspirations. FULL TEAMS
Levi Greenwood will make his return from a serious knee injury for Collingwood in tomorrow night’s clash against North Melbourne, while tall Mason Cox has also earned a recall.
The 31-year-old midfielder will line-up for his first game since injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in last year’s qualifying final against Geelong and is one of five changes for the Magpies for the match at the Gabba.
The Magpies have recalled Cox for his first game since Round 6, while defender Jordan Roughead has recovered from a bout of concussion which sidelined him for the past two rounds.
Young forward Flynn Appleby, 21, is set to play his first game of the season and veteran Chris Mayne also comes into the side.
Forward Brody Mihocek was ruled out of the clash after suffering concussion in a nasty collision against Melbourne last week and Ben Reid (hamstring) is also out injured.
Callum Brown, veteran Lynden Dunn and Rupert Wills have all been omitted.
Forward Jaidyn Stephenson has again been overlooked.
North Melbourne have welcomed back key defender Robbie Tarrant after he was a late withdrawal from the team’s last match against Brisbane, while Paul Ahern returns to the team for the first time since Round 6.
The duo replace Will Walker (hamstring) and Sam Durdin (omitted).

Majak Daw, Jared Polec and Aaron Hall, who were dropped last round, have been named as emergencies.
The Kangaroos earlier ruled out key forward Ben Brown, who is still suffering from some swelling on his injured knee.
Brown was listed as a test this week’s clash, but Kangaroos general manager of football Brady Rawlings said he was still a week or two away from a return.
The forward injured his knee against Geelong in Round 11 and has missed the past two matches.
“He has still got a little bit of swelling there as well so he is another week or two away, despite him running at the moment and looking OK,” Rawlings said.
Probed on the future of Polec earlier, North Melbourne coach Rhyce Shaw said he had high standards he expected players to meet
“I’m not going to talk about Jared’s future or anyone else’s future,” Shaw said.
“All I can talk about is what is happening now and as I said, I have got really high standards and I expect a lot from my players in terms of playing their role and playing for the team and doing what is expected from them week in and week out and being consistent with that.
“It doesn’t really matter where you sit, hopefully every player on our list understands what is expected and if they don’t meet those expectations then they put themselves at risk.”

BIG BLOW FOR IMPORTANT CROWS DEFENDER
Superstar Geelong forward Tom Hawkins will be licking his lips after Adelaide defender Daniel Talia was ruled out with injury ahead of Sunday’s clash at Adelaide Oval.
The in-form Cat – who tore apart Port Adelaide with six goals last round – looms as the biggest roadblock for the Crows, who are still searching for their first win of the 2020 season.
Darcy Fogarty and Chayce Jones are the main inclusions for Matthew Nicks’ team.
Aiding Adelaide’s victory bid, though, is the withdrawal of Geelong skipper Joel Selwood, who was unable to get up for the clash after battling a hamstring niggle.
Dynamic Irishman Zach Tuohy is also out with injury, while coach Chris Scott has recalled young ruck-forward Esava Ratugolea in an attempt to stretch Adelaide’s backline.
The return of Jack Steven, Luke Dahlhaus – after a long injury lay-off – and Brad Close also bolster Geelong’s side.
Meanwhile, Brisbane and St Kilda have both made two tweaks to their line-ups ahead of Sunday’s mouth-watering contest at the Gabba.
Cam Rayner headlines the ins for the Lions, with Tom Fullarton also earning a spot at the expense of Matt Eagles and Rhys Mathieson, who were both omitted.
Burly onballer Dean Kent and defender Jake Carlisle strengthen the Saints’ side, replacing Jack Lonie (omitted) and Hunter Clark (managed).
Lastly, GWS coach Leon Cameron has swung the axe ahead of their clash against West Coast, making six changes.
Out of form forward Jeremy Finlayson and ruckman Sam Jacobs are the biggest names to be dropped, with Shane Mumford and Toby Greene huge additions to the team.
The Eagles have made just two changes, with Liam Duggan and Xavier O’Neill replacing Brayden Ainsworth and the injured Jack Redden.
Essendon ring in seven changes for Dreamtime
Essendon has reacted savagely to its run of poor form, making seven changes for its Dreamtime clash with Richmond on Saturday night at TIO Stadium.
Forward Jake Stringer headlines the inclusions after recovering from his ankle injury, while Devon Smith and Tom Bellchambers have also been recalled by the Bombers.
Small forward Irving Mosquito will make his highly anticipated senior debut.
The Bombers have won only one of their past six games and coach John Worsfold has responded.
Tom Cutler, Josh Begley, Shaun McKernan, Jacob Townsend, Kobe Mutch and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher have all been axed.
Irishman Conor McKenna will miss with injury.
Bachar Houli will return for the Tigers in his first game since Round 5 after recently rejoining Richmond in Queensland.
Houli will replace two-time premiership teammate Nathan Broad.

At the injury-riddled Hawks, James Sicily, Jaeger O’Meara, Jack Gunston and James Frawley have all ruled out for their clash with Port Adelaide on Saturday.

WILL PATTON EASE HAWKS’ INJURY PAIN?
Hawthorn is poised to take a cautious approach with key forward Jonathon Patton, all but ruling him out of Saturday’s clash with ladder-leader Port Adelaide.
Patton took part in a scratch match against West Coast last week and performed well in what was his first hitout since suffering a hamstring injury in Round 6.
However, Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said it was not worth rushing back a player who has played only four AFL games in more than two years.
“He’s got to train again today but he’ll be in the mix to play for certain,” Clarkson said on Friday morning.
“But we’ve just got to make a judgment on whether one game back is enough match conditioning for him. He performed well in the game last week and has pulled up pretty well. But we just need to sit with our medical staff and conditioning staff and make a judgment on whether or not he needs one more game in terms of his match conditioning.
“He hasn’t played a lot of footy for three years now, so all these things come into the mix when we consider what’s best for him. It’s not about necessarily this week for him.
“He’s available to play and obviously wants to play. But we’ve just got to work out what’s best for the long-term.”
The Hawks will be forced to make at least two changes for the clash with the Power when they name their team tonight, with midfielder Jaeger O’Meara (hand) and defender James Sicily (knee) going out of the side.
Clarkson said he would look to one of Will Day, Jack Scrimshaw and Changkuoth Jiath to help fill the void left by Sicily in defence over the remainder of the season.
“It’s too hard to say someone’s going to fit into that spot nice and easily and take off where he left off,” Clarkson said.
“But someone’s going to need to fill that spot and we’ll see if we can get it from those three young fellas.”
Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley confirmed the Power would make four changes in total to its team to play Hawthorn on Saturday.
While Ladhams and Houston are out for the next three and two games respectively, Kane Farrell and Xavier Duursma have both been dropped after last week’s loss to Geelong.
Veterans Brad Ebert and Justin Westhoff have been recalled along with creative defenders Jarrod Lienert and Riley Bonner.
Huge buzz with Mosquito to make Dons debut
Carlton’s hopes of retaining the momentum gained out of Jack Newnes’ after-the-siren heroics last week received a huge boost when it recalled key players Jack Martin and Marc Pittonet for Friday night’s clash with Gold Coast in Darwin.
It comes as the Suns dropped three players including Alex Sexton for the second time this season as they chase their first win since Round 7 against Sydney.
And Essendon is set to unveil its 2018 draftee Irving Mosquito in Saturday night’s Dreamtime clash with Richmond at TIO Stadium.
The Blues are a game and percentage outside the eight and need to keep on winning to keep alive their quest for what would be their first finals berth since 2013.
Martin returns from only one game missed with a calf strain while Pittonet has proved his fitness after suffering a finger injury against West Coast.
Martin joins fellow indigenous Blues Eddie Betts, Liam Jones and Sam Petrevski-Seton in the opening game of the AFL‘s Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
Matt Kennedy‘s quad injury has kept him out of the side for the clash at TIO Stadium, while last week’s first-gamer Josh Honey has been omitted.
Gold Coast has had four losses and a draw since knocking off the Swans, with Stuart Dew making three changes for the clash with the Blues.
Skipper David Swallow returns for his 150th match, making him only the second Suns player to reach that figure with the club, while Jarrod Harbrow and Sean Lemmens are also welcome inclusions.
The three players to make way this week include leadership group members Sexton and Brayden Fiorini as well as Nick Holman, who were all relegated from the team that lost to Richmond by 21 points last Monday.
Mosquito, who was the Bombers’ pick 38 in the 2018 draft, has been close to selection on a number of occasions but will get his chance against the Tigers.
Meanwhile, Richmond will welcome back premiership defender Bachar Houli for Saturday night’s clash against Essendon in Darwin.
Houli will return to the Tigers line-up for the first time since Round 5 after choosing to stay in Victoria for family reasons when the Tigers entered their interstate hub.
The two-time premiership player has since completed a two-week quarantine in Queensland before being cleared to rejoin the team.
And premiership teammate Shane Edwards might not be far away.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers had taken a conservative approach with Houli, but his training form now had him primed for a return.
“Bachar will play. It was a conservative call last week,” Hardwick said on Thursday.
“We thought to give himself the best chance for the remainder of the year, too, we would take that longer-term approach.
“He has trained really, really well. His vibrancy on the track has been noticeable and he just gives us a different skill set out of that back half.”
The Tigers are also in the process of trying to arrange Edwards’ return to the team, with an application pending with the Queensland Government.
The AFL’s next “transition hub” is scheduled for September 1, but the Tigers are hopeful of getting Edwards, who remained in Melbourne for the birth of his child, into Queensland earlier.
“There is an application pending at the moment, it is with the Queensland Government and we respect their process, we know they have got a lot of things to work through,” Hardwick said.
“From a priority point of view, it is probably not on their high-list of agenda items at the moment, but the Government has been terrific for us allowing us to play up here.
“I can give you the latest date which is the September 1 flight, but anything earlier than that we are certainly in the Queensland Government’s hands and anything they can do we are certainly appreciative of.”
It has been reported Richmond and Geelong had made a proposal to have Edwards and Geelong star Gary Ablett, who also remained in Victoria for family reasons, live and quarantine together in Queensland for two weeks to make their returns earlier than expected.
“Those details I’m not exactly sure, I think we are still working through (those details), but there is a possibility of that. Once again that is more out of our hands,” Hardwick said.
“We’ll surely clarify that once we get the pending result back.”
Hardwick said there was no doubt over the fitness of forward Jack Riewoldt, spotted working by himself in training, who had been managed in a shorter training week.
“(It was) just a management thing, he will definitely play. It was one of those shorter type weeks, he is 31 years of age now, he is a little bit banged up at various stages,” Hardwick said.
“It was always on the cards that he was going to have a lighter week this week.”
Meanwhile, the Tigers coach confirmed Dion Prestia had experienced a “slight setback” after undergoing a minor procedure on his injured ankle to clear up an infection.
“He had a little bit of infection, it was a little bit slow to respond to the surgery initially. The docs were a little bit concerned about it and then they went in and had the minor procedure yesterday or the day before,” Hardwick said.
“It was a positive result (for us). It was an infection so they took the band out, it will be a minor inconvenience, obviously a slight setback, but he will be back to play hopefully by the start of the finals if we’re good enough to make it.”
Hardwick was confident Edwards could come back into the team to make an immediate impact in the side — even if he could not arrive until early September.
“From our point of view he will come back and play. He has been doing a power of training back at home after the birth of his child, he is in really good nick,” Hardwick said.
“We spoke to our Melbourne hub yesterday and they are really impressed with the way that he is going. We think once again he slots into our side as soon as the iso period is finished. He is such an important player, All-Australian, one of our better players, so he would have an immediate impact we think.”
Crows debutant comes up against one of the pacesetters

He may have missed a set shot on goal at training on Friday, but regardless, there were no ifs or buts at the selection table for Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks: rookie Jordan Butts will make his AFL debut when the Crows take on Geelong on Sunday.
“We just gave him an opportunity to kick a goal to get in (the team),” Nicks said lightheartedly.
“He missed, but he’s playing down back, so hopefully he learns from that one if he gets an opportunity (in front of goal) on Sunday.”
The 20-year-old defender will become the ninth Crow this season to make his AFL debut, while three more — Ben Keays, Ben Croker and Billy Frampton — have all made their club debuts in Adelaide colours.
The debuting Butts is not the only good news for the Crows as they head into the game against a flying Geelong unit, with small forward Tyson Stengle signing a two-year contract extension on Friday afternoon.
Crows’ list manager Justin Reid described the 21-year-old as an important cog in Adelaide’s forward line.
“Tyson has showed he has the talent to play at the highest level and he will be an important part of our forward structure as we continue to develop our list,” he said.
Butts is expected to replace veteran defender Daniel Talia in the Crows’ final 22, with the key defender in doubt to face the Cats due to knee soreness.
However if Talia proves his fitness, Jake Kelly will make way for the debutant.
