AFL star Lachie Hunter in alleged drink-driving incident

A Western Bulldogs star has reportedly been identified as the person who helped AFL star Lachie Hunter leave the scene of an alleged drink-driving crash.

AFL star Lachie Hunter has been fined by police for breaching public health orders and is reportedly facing further charges after an alleged drink-driving incident in Melbourne last night.

The Western Bulldogs vice-captain’s car was allegedly involved in an incident at Middle Park, having crashed into several parked cars, according to multiple reports.

Police discovered Hunter’s training bag in the car before finding the 25-year-old a short time later in a different location, radio station SEN reported.

Hunter was reportedly then breathalysed where he blew a reading of 0.123 – more than twice the legal limit.

There was a twist later on Friday morning when it was reported by AFL.com.au a teammate of Hunter drove him from the scene of the alleged drink-driving incident to another Bulldogs player’s house.

The report identified Bailey Smith as the teammate who drove Hunter from the scene.

He is reported to have taken Hunter to teammate Billy Gowers house.

Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon addressed the allegations surrounding Hunter on SEN Breakfast.

“Football is pretty prominent in people’s lives and this is not the message that we want sent out there,” Gordon said.

“We will investigate the circumstances. When we know more, we will more to say about it.

“Lachie is a good young man and sadly it’s a reflection of not dealing at all appropriately with the pressure a lot of us are under and the circumstances in which we live.

“But you can’t see that as an excuse. This is behaviour we don’t want to see and we’ll get an explanation for it, get the circumstances.

“But the message we want to send to people is during these difficult times you need to put extra effort into sticking to the community effort.”

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan also reacted to the news on 3AW Radio, saying the AFL Integrity Unit is investigating.

“Drink-driving is just unacceptable in any aspect,” McLachlan said. “And the rules around quarantine in our community are very clear as well."

A police statement to AFL.com.au this morning said Prahran Highway Patrol attended Middle Park following reports an SUV had crashed into four parked cars.

The police confirmed the driver had left the scene but was later found in South Yarra and blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.123.

His licence was immediately suspended for 12 months and is expected to be “charged on summons with drink-driving and other traffic matters”.

Hunter was reportedly fined $1652 for breaching public health orders set in place to restrict the spread of coronavirus.

Hunter was the Bulldogs’ best-and-fairest winner in 2018 and last year signed a five-year contract extension to remain at the kennel until the end of the 2024 season.
