AFL round 4: Charlie Cameron blunder leaves commentators in hysterics during Brisbane Lions victory
Brisbane Lions star Charlie Cameron executed a “mark of the year contender”, but also left commentators in stitches with a horror blunder.
The Fox Footy commentators were in hysterics after Brisbane Lions star Charlie Cameron missed a simple free kick at goal on Sunday.
During the third quarter of their clash against the Adelaide Crows at the Gabba, the Lions were leading by 22 points when Cameron was awarded a free kick 15 metres from the posts.
The 25-year-old would slot the goal 99 times out of 100 attempts, but on this occasion, he added a bit too much flair in the banana kick. Playing against his former club, the footy crashed into the upright for a behind, and the commentators were cackling.

AFL great Dwayne Russell could hardly believe Cameron didn’t attempt a standard drop-punt.
“It’s drop punt territory for most, but around the corner’s got a little but more flair and artistry,” Russell said on Fox Footy.
“Oh my goodness, that will be replayed in a few spots.”
Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton could barely contain his laughter, relentlessly giggling after the behind was awarded.
“You’ve got to admit, he does a bite off a little bit more than he needs to,” Brereton said through muffled laughter.
“He’s 12 metres out. Why wouldn’t you kick a drop punt?
“He’s perhaps a little bit more theatrical than he needs to be on occasion.
“I love the motorbike; I love the rev-up.”
Russell replied: “Theatrical? He’ll be well and truly off-Broadway if he keeps putting those kind of acts together.
“Wow, missing from there.”
On the Couch host Gerard Healy bluntly said: “If you can’t work that out, you’re in trouble.”
Ex-teammate Luke Brown was eager to rub salt into the wounds, giving Cameron a few words of advice and a mighty shove after the botched shot.

Charlie Cameron will cop a lot of stick should the Lions somehow lose this. Bad miss. #AFLLionsCrows

This is the worst quarter of footy Iâve seen the Lions play in a while. No urgency. They look like they thought the Crows would just roll over and the game was done #AFL

Cameron’s blunder epitomised a shocking third quarter for Brisbane, who were unable to land a goal in the 16-minute period.
Although they held a considerable 40-point lead at halftime, the deficit was reduced to only three goals as the round four match entered the final quarter.
However, Cameron redeemed himself by executing a “mark of the year contender” in the fourth quarter. He lunged onto Reilly O’Brien’s shoulders to claim Zac Bailey’s pinpoint accurate kick in a phenomenal effort near the 50m line.
“That’s a big leap off three paces, fantastic,” Brereton yelled in commentary.
“That’ll turn into a poster.”
Brereton said: “He’s going to put on a clinic for the last ten minutes.”

Rather than shooting for goal, Cameron dished the ball to teammate Hugh McCluggage, who managed a behind.
After the final siren, Cameron conceded he should have backed himself to score the goal.
“I ended up getting the ride I wanted, (but) I went early,” Cameron told Fox Footy.
“I knew that I’d get a big ride on big Reilly O’Brien and ended up coming down with it.
“Should’ve kicked the goal.”

Cameron ended the one-sided encounter with two goals, two behinds, nine disposals and four marks.
The Queenslander represented Adelaide for four seasons before signing with Brisbane in 2018.
Cameron is typically a reliable goalscorer for the Lions — he kicked four goals in the first half against the Fremantle Dockers in round two.
Brisbane legend Jonathan Brown called Cameron a “nightmare” for the opposition defenders.
“He’s one of the real genuine X-factors in the competition you pay money for; even if you’re an opposition supporter, you go and watch Charlie Cameron,” Brown said earlier this month.
The Lions will face Port Adelaide next weekend for their round five fixture at the Gabba.
