Former No.1 draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan hopes a change in number is a “reset” after a disappointing debut season with the Western Bulldogs.

The 19-year-old has ditched the No.22 jersey he wore in 2021 and will now wear the No.2 jersey made famous by former captain Robert Murphy.

Ugle-Hagan, who had to wait until round 15 for his AFL debut in 2021 and didn’t play any finals as the Bulldogs progressed through to the grand final, pointed to a two-pronged in inspiration for the fresh start.

“The main thing was I wasn’t happy with last year’s performance,” he said.

“I feel like the change in number can be more of a reset.

“I picked the number as my mentor is Chris Johnson and he wore the No.2. He has looked after me while I have been in Melbourne.”

“I’ve always looked up to him.”

The number is synonymous with club legend Murphy, who famously accepted the 2016 premiership trophy from coach Luke Beveridge wearing his jumper despite not playing in the game because of injury.

Ugle-Hagan was quick to share the news with the former captain who was happy for the rising star to grab his number.

“I love Bob Murphy,” he told the club website.

“I sent him a photo and he was the first to know when I got back to the club. He got around it and loved it, which was good.”

The Bulldogs will open their 2022 campaign with a grand final rematch against Melbourne in round 1.
