AFL great Matthew Richardson has often been the subject of some mostly good-natured ribbing, due to some goofy antics on and off the footy field.

On this occasion, he has thrown himself in the, well, shallow end, after releasing some home security footage of himself cleaning his backyard pool.

Richardson was scooping up leaves from the pool when he got too close to the edge and lost his footing, falling into the pool fully clothed.

After surfacing, he can be heard cursing: “F***.”

Ever the good sport, Richardson shared footage of his mishap on Instagram, much to the delight of his followers.

He wrote: “How’s your day going? Mine’s grouse thanks for asking” with a face palm emoji.

Triple Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin said: “This is the best!!!”

Fellow Tigers goalkicking great Jack Riewoldt joked: “Fake video...you’ve got someone who does this for you #poolboy.”

Brett Deledio commented: “This is all time.”

Richmond forward Tom Lynch added: “This is gold.”

Ex-Richmond captain Chris Newman commented with several cry laughing emojis.

One person asked Richardson “How’s the knee after that?”

He replied: “Rooted.”

Another concerned follower asked if his phone was in his pocket when he fell in, with Richardson confirming indeed it was.

The 49-year-old kicked 800 goals from 282 matches with Richmond from 1993 to his retirement in 2009.

Richardson moved into the media shortly after his retirement and has been roasted countless times by colleagues and former teammates, but he has brought this clumsy moment into the public eye all on his own.

Never afraid to cop a joke at his own expense, one of Richardson’s biggest claims to fame was exposed earlier this year.

The man affectionately known as “Richo” has often spoken about a hanger he took in the opening round of the 1994 season against the Western Bulldogs.

“My memory of it is … in the goalsquare, it felt like a hanger. When you get up, you feel that lift. I did feel it, I got that lift, it felt like it was a good mark,” Richardson said as he recounted the moment.

Sam Pang added: “You said it was the greatest mark you’ve ever taken!”

“I feel like it was, but I’ve never seen it. I’ve never seen any vision of it. The game wasn’t broadcast, back then not all the games were broadcast,” Richardson replied.

“30 years in the making, I’ve never seen it.”

It was then that Richardson was informed the footage had been tracked down, a point that quickly left him squirming in his chair.

Footage began to roll and it’s fair to say it didn’t live up to the hype that Richardson had been spruiking for so long.

As the ball sailed towards the goals, Richardson leaves the ground and gets onto a Bulldogs defender before hauling in a chest mark on the goal line.

“Mate you took a chest mark in the goalsquare … what are you talking about?” Pang said bluntly.

Richo attempted to claim the mark didn’t look as good because of the grainy footage before offering up what he really thought of the moment.

“The modern cameras would have captured that better, where’s your 4K camera,” Richardson says with tongue firmly in cheek.

When asked what he thought of the vision he responded: “Nah it’s s***house. “I’ve been telling that story for 30 years.”
