THE AFL has agreed to help the embattled Melbourne Football Club in its reconstruction, but the support will be "highly conditional".

In a statement released late today, shortly after the Herald Sun revealed the resignation of president Don McLardy, the league said it would consider today's detailed presentation from McLardy and Demons CEO Peter Jackson before finalising its response in the coming weeks.

"The presentation detailed a number of significant challenges facing club and substantial changes required to improve performance at every level," AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said.

"The AFL received an outline of the fundamental reconstruction of the club.

"(The) AFL Commission will support Melbourne in its reconstruction. Now (it) will determine level of financial support required to turn around its fortunes.

"Any AFL support will be highly conditional but AFL want Melbourne to be strong, vibrant football club, which its supporters (and) members deserve."
