AFL 2024: Three-year deal for Hawthorn defender Jack Scrimshaw

A Hawthorn defender has earnt a major contract extension less than a month after he copped a monster spray from his coach.

Important Hawthorn defender Jack Scrimshaw has inked a new three-year deal as reward for his impressive form to begin the 2024 season.

Scrimshaw, 25, was pushed to the outer at Hawthorn last season as he struggled with fitness and form but has been close to the Hawks’ best player across the last four games, which have delivered three wins.

The 194cm defender, who is sixth in the AFL for intercept possessions this season, will remain at Waverley Park until at least the end of 2027.

Hawthorn swooped on Scrimshaw at the end of 2018 after he had joined Gold Coast as pick 7 in the 2016 draft but only managed to play four games for the Suns.

Hawks list boss Mark McKenzie said Scrimshaw was reaping the rewards of a “career best pre-season”.

“Having been a former top-10 draft pick, Scrim’s talent has been obvious since walking through the doors of our club, but his continued growth and development has been fantastic to witness especially most recently.” McKenzie said.

“Off the back of a career-best pre-season, we’ve seen Scrim build towards some really strong form in the early stages of 2024, which we’re confident he can continue.

“No doubt Scrim is an important piece of what we are building here at Hawthorn, and I’m sure the brown and gold faithful will be delighted to see his talents locked away for three more years.”
