AFL 2024: Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury to miss final pre-season match
Richmond has brought in a handful of stars for a final pre-season hitout against Collingwood, while the Magpies have ruled out two veterans.
Collingwood stars Scott Pendlebury and Jeremy Howe will enter the season without a match against opposition under their belts after the pair sustained training injuries last week.
The veteran duo will sit out the Magpies’ inaugural Charity Shield match against Richmond at Ikon Park on Tuesday night, while the Tigers have regained a handful of stars from their first pre-season hitout including Dustin Martin, Tim Taranto and Dion Prestia.
The Magpies said Pendlebury suffered a knock to his knee during training on Sunday but was expected to be available for next week’s Opening Round clash against GWS, while Howe was also set to be fit to play in the season proper as he recovers from a corked calf sustained at training.
Captain Darcy Moore will return for the Magpies after he sat out last week’s match sim loss to North Melbourne, but his opposite Toby Nankervis will not play for the Tigers as he continues to manage a foot injury.
Richmond rested star defender Nick Vlastuin but named Dylan Grimes, Liam Baker, Prestia, Martin and Taranto for their first pre-season games ahead of its season opener against Gold Coast.
Prestia will return after overcoming a hamstring strain which he suffered during an intraclub game at Punt Road at the end of January.
Rhyan Mansell (ankle syndesmosis injury) and Sam Banks (calf tightness) will miss the clash after playing against Melbourne at Casey Fields last week.
The Tigers had no room for mature-age draft pick Kane McAuliffe in their 26-man side, but included Seth Campbell, Mykelti Lefau and Steely Green, with Maurice Rioli Jr, James Trezise and Hugo Ralphsmith named among the emergencies.
Collingwood, who will again be coached by an assistant in Hayden Skipworth, named Ash Johnson and Reef McInnes in its side, with the pair set to compete for Dan McStay’s full-forward spot while Nathan Kreuger missed selection.
Kreuger was an emergency alongside SSP recruit Lachie Sullivan, Joe Richards and Jakob Ryan.
A VFL match between the Tigers and Magpies will be held at Punt Road from 3pm.
Proceeds from the Charity Shield match will go towards Foodbank, with fully ticketed entry at Ikon Park including adjusted prices for club members.
