AFL 2022: Star winger Karl Amon joins Hawthorn as Port Adelaide’s free agency compensation is revealed
Karl Amon will play for Hawthorn next year after his free agency deal was confirmed. But what did Port Adelaide receive as compensation?
Former Port Adelaide winger Karl Amon is officially a Hawk, joining the brown and gold on a four-year deal as an unrestricted free agent.
The 27-year-old, who finished 12th in this year’s Brownlow Medal count, chose Hawthorn over Melbourne and St Kilda.
Amon’s deal is understood to be worth about $650,000 per season after he averaged 24 disposals, four inside 50s and almost 500m gained in what was arguably a career-best year in 2022.
He made the All-Australian squad of 40 last season with similar numbers.
The AFL awarded the Power a second-round pick as compensation, which could be traded to Richmond for midfielder Jack Graham and may end up at the Giants.
Hawks list boss Mark McKenzie was “thrilled” to secure Amon’s signature.
“It’s pleasing to hear Karl indicate his decision to commit to the club was based around the positive direction of the organisation and the exciting brand of football being developed,” McKenzie said.
“He is an incredibly gifted athlete and can be damaging by foot.
“With more than 100 games under his belt; we believe his skillset and experience will complement our young and developing list.”
Amon is a significant upgrade on the wing for Hawthorn, which delisted ex-Magpie Tom Phillips at season’s end.
The Tigers aim to broker a deal with Greater Western Sydney for midfielders Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, so any extra selections will help make that happen.
Taranto is out of contract but Hopper’s deal isn’t due to expire until the end of next season, when he will be a free agent.
Industry sources believe Hopper’s contract status is what will extend negotiations as the Giants try to gain fair remuneration despite the added benefit of easing their salary cap stress.
Port Adelaide also needs to reach an agreement with West Coast for Junior Rioli, who requested a trade to Alberton.
The Eagles have not asked about any of the Power’s players despite a report linking out-of-contract defender Martin Frederick to the impending trade.
