AFL 2021: Punter selling piece of Brownlow Medal history for $8k

AFL fans have the chance to own a piece of Brownlow Medal history, but it’ll set them back a cool eight thousand dollars.

AFL fans have the chance to own a piece of Brownlow Medal history – provided they have a spare $8,000 lying around.

Port Adelaide midfielder Ollie Wines took home the AFL’s top individual honour at the Brownlow Medal ceremony in Perth on Sunday night.

Andrew Fordham, the coach of the Collegians Football Club in the Perth Football League, was in attendance and spied an opportunity to make some cash out of Wines’ win.

Shortly after proceedings ended, Fordham listed Wines’ dinner table place card on Facebook Marketplace.

Fordham has dubbed the place card “a unique & seriously tidy piece of Port Adelaide & (Wines’ hometown) Echuca’s history.”

With his record-equalling 36 votes, Wines edged out Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli (33 votes), Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver (31) and Carlton young gun Sam Walsh (30) to claim the 2021 Brownlow Medal.

It was the first time in the history of the award four players had polled 30 or more votes.

In his acceptance speech, Wines paid tribute to his AFL rivals, as well as to his teammates at the Power, who advanced to the preliminary final but were knocked out of the grand final race by the Western Bulldogs.

“I’m a little bit rattled to be honest,” Wines said.

“There’s so many great players that I still look up to at my age.

“They’ve had tremendous seasons and a lot of them are playing on Saturday in the biggest game of the year and I’m extremely envious of them.

“I’d love to be in their position but it wasn’t to be this year. I know we’ll rebound and go again next year.

“This is a football club award. It doesn’t take an individual, it takes a team, a football department, admin staff, everyone to get someone to this point.”
