Patrick Dangerfield has had words with an umpire after he was brutally dismissed as a goal threat while more than 60m from home.

Dangerfield’s monster goal from way down town — and the lip he gave the whistleblowers immediately after it — provided a humorous moment on a night when Geelong sent a message to the rest of the AFL with a 59-point thumping of St Kilda at the Gabba.

The former Adelaide star was called to play on in the middle of his run-up after marking the ball around 60m from the goals.

While the whistleblowers clearly didn’t think the Brownlow medallist was a serious chance of making the distance, Dangerfield carried on with his set shot after play on was called and proceeded to send the Sherrin 60m on the fly.

Some good sheparding in the goal square and some awful St Kilda goal line defence saw Dangerfield celebrate a monster goal in the third quarter.

It piled more misery on the helpless Saints as Geelong kicked nine unanswered goals to runaway with a 14.9 (93) to 4.10 (34) victory.

Fox Footy commentators Alastair Lynch and Garry Lyon said in commentary that Dangerfield was well within his rights to let the umpire know about the goal.

After slotting the goal, the 30-year-old star followed the umpire back to the next centre bounce, letting him know exactly what he thought about the play on decision.

“He just ran past the umpire and had a word to him,” Lynch said.

Lyon said: “Who is the umpire to say Patrick Dangerfield can’t kick the ball 55-58m? I would hope he would run back and say, ‘Now don’t you make that same mistake again ump’”.

Lynch responded: “He won’t because he sniffed him out. Followed him back to the middle and just had a little word into his ear”.

In a post match interview, Dangerfield was able to see the lighter side of the umpire’s brutal lack of faith in his long leg.

“I said give me an extra five seconds next time. I’m only just 30”.

The Cats were in cruise control when Dangerfield slotted his only goal of the night as St Kilda was kept goalless after the 15-minute mark of the second quarter.

Geelong was able to kick the club’s second highest score of the year as the leap-frogged the Saints into the top four on the ladder.

After four wins on the hop, it was a brutal reality check for the Saints.

Tom Hawkins (five goals) and Gary Rohan (four goals) had a private party up forward for the Cats, while the Saints looked every bit a team that had played just four days earlier.

“This has been a fair-dinkum old-fashioned belting,” Lyon said in the fourth quarter.

Footy legend Jonathan Brown described the Cats’ centre clearance dominance as “an absolute bashing”.

No matter what you call it, it was a sorry night for the Saints.
