AFL 2020: Hawthorn set 94-year club record low in Collingwood mauling

Hawthorn has sent AFL historians reaching for their record books after the club crashed to a 94-year low in a nightmare loss to Collingwood.

Hawthorn has crashed to its lowest score since 1964 after they were belted on and off the field against Collingwood on Friday night.

The Hawks failed to turn up and registered their lowest three-quarter time score since the 1926 season, 94 years ago.

The Pies ran rings around the sluggish Hawks and appeared to put the cue in the rack in the fourth quarter before the siren sounded on an 8.11 (59) to 3.9 (27) thumping.

The Hawks were just 2.2 (14) after three quarters — the second lowest total shots on goal after three quarters in the history of the club.

The Hawks didn’t kick a goal from the third minute mark of the second quarter until the 13-minute mark of the fourth quarter.

According to football reporter Daniel Cherny, the final score was also the Hawks’ worst since round 9, 1964.

Footy legend Wayne Carey said there was “absolutely nothing” positive that the Hawks could take into their next match.

“Hawthorn, I’m scratching my head to be honest,” Carey said.

“There is too big a gap between the good and the bad.”

Collingwood were all over the Hawks.

Jonathan Brown told Fox Footy Hawthorn’s biggest issue it its repeated failures to move the ball outside of its defensive fifty.

“It’s a big problem – it’s been a problem all year,” Brown told Fox Footy.

“If you’re going to play four tall defenders, including a ruckman in Ben McEvoy who started there, you’re going to struggle to bring the ball out of defence

“What’s stood out is they’ve been kicking it backwards, but long kicks backwards. I definitely know Alastair Clarkson wouldn’t be directing them to do those sorts of things, so they’ve been completely out of whack.”

Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd also told 3AW Radio at half time the Hawks were lacking effort.

The only concern for the Pies was a sickening injury to debutant Will Kelly in the last quarter.
Kelly went up in a marking contest but got turned around in the air at the top of the pack. He crashed back onto the turf with his left wrist trying to soften his landing.

However, the left arm appeared to twist in a violent manner and the 19-year-old immediately grimaced in pain.

He got back to his feet by himself but immediately clutched at his elbow and limped to the bench.

Sports injury expert Dr Peter Larkins posted on Twitter it appeared that Kelly suffered a dislocated elbow.

Coach Nathan Buckley said in his post-match press conference Kelly dislocated his elbow, but may have also fractured a bone.

It was just as bad a night for Hawks star forward Jonathon Patton after he suffered a hamstring injury and broke down in tears on the sideline in the first quarter.

After being assessed by a team medical official, Hawthorn football manager Shane Wright said Patton could be back playing for the Hawks in just two weeks.

However, the former Giants No. 1 draft pick was spotted launching into an emotion-charged discussion with a team doctor.

Fox Footy’s Jon Ralph said it appeared that Patton had given the doctor the cold shoulder after suffering yet another injury.

A clearly frustrated Patton didn’t want to talk and appeared to want to stay on the bench as the team went into their quarter-time huddle.

Footy legend Jonathan Brown shrugged off Patton’s emotions.

“He wouldn’t be the first person to tell the doctor where to go (after an injury),” Brown said at half time.
