Whether you are looking for a change in career or you just wanted a break between finishing school and taking up further study, you don’t need to wait for a new year to start a new chapter. As midyear university entries begin, there’s no time like the present to kick off new study plans and step into a new chapter.
news.com.au is teaming up with Swinburne University of Technology to give you a six-month jump on your career by starting midyear.
When media and communications student Josh Bendall finished high school, he wasn't eager to rush into more study. He chose, instead, to spend six months working before beginning his tertiary studies midyear at Swinburne University of Technology. Although he started midyear, he received a full welcome.
"To be introduced to all the tutors and the other students who were in my course at the time – it was great," he says. "It was great to be on campus."
Mr Bendall chose Swinburne primarily because its courses offer real-world industry experience and a closer connection to the ultimate end game: the world of work.
The university's 'Work Integrated Learning' comprises professional placements, internships or industry-linked projects and is offered to all Swinburne students enrolled in undergraduate degrees to enhance their employability.
As part of one of his early media studies subjects, Mr Bendall interviewed the founder of a content creation agency.
"I chose to interview someone who was in the field that I wanted to get into," he says, adding that the support he received from Swinburne while fostering real-world connections with his future employer was invaluable. "After another semester of studying, I was offered an internship by the business I profiled. And I got the job after that."
Mr Bendall is now juggling full-time work as an associate video producer at Yakazoo in Melbourne while completing his degree at Swinburne. He credits the opportunities he received to the industry experience that was part of his degree, as well as the support of his tutors and the subjects' flexibility.
Swinburne's senior deputy vice-chancellor and chief academic officer Professor Chris Pilgrim says industry leaders are calling out for curious graduates who think critically and can apply knowledge in practical ways.
"Swinburne has engaged strongly with industry and is focused on ensuring our graduates are ready for the challenges of the workplace by offering all of our students’ authentic workplace experiences as part of their courses," he says.
He says practical work experience not only supports students entering the workforce but also provides them with a head start enabling them to advance in their careers at a faster rate.
"Swinburne’s renewed focus on Work Integrated Learning will benefit our students directly by creating closer connections between the world of work and the world of study. We are committed to doing all we can to set them up for success once they graduate and in their future careers," he says.
Mr Bendall's decision to study at midyear is becoming increasingly popular. No longer are universities following rigid intake dates – across different courses and levels, there are several intakes throughout the year.
To his relief, Mr Bendall started university alongside many others.
"There were a lot of people who wanted a break after leaving school, whether they wanted the first half of the year to work or do something different," Mr Bendall says. "Many people were doing the same thing as me."
Mr Bendall says the supportive, inclusive culture at Swinburne helped him feel welcome, allowing him to integrate seamlessly into academic and social university life.
"I firmly believe if you connect with the people at Swinburne – there are so many connections to make within your course, with your teachers, and other students – you'll find an opportunity."
Don’t wait for another year to close; mid-year uni applications are open now.
