Oscars 2014 best dressed: the Herald Sun’s red carpet picks from this year’s 86th Academy Awards
MUTED colours saw black and cream the standout hues of Hollywood’s biggest night, as Anna Byrne rates our top 10 red carpet looks.
THE WEATHER may have been glum, but glamour still reigned supreme on the rain soaked red carpet for the 86th Annual Academy awards.
A subdued colour palette saw black and cream the standout hues of Hollywood’s biggest night while sherbet pastels and bold reds also proved popular.
Soft drapery, cap sleeves and beaded embellishment topped the trends of tinsletown’s a-listers while silhouettes were clean and structured. There was a hint of flirtation from the more daring fashionistas with sheer panelling and cut outs, but most played it safe on the most famous red carpet.
Portia de Rossi
Her wife Ellen DeGeneres might be the host, but the girl from Geelong stole the sartorial spotlight from her spouse on the red carpet in a cream appliqué gown with modern halter-neck neckline.
Lupita Nyong’o
It may have been her first sashay down the Oscars carpet, but Lupita looked like a seasoned professional. The pleated Prada gown in duck egg blue with spangled embellishment was fit for a prom night
Cate Blanchett
Ethereal and whimsical, Cate was the epitome of Old Hollywood glamour in this Armani Prive, soft gold dress with romantic cap sleeves.
Charlize Theron
Looking like a screen siren, Charlize showed off her serpentine curves in this structured silhouette.
Amy Adams
The midnight hue may have been understated for Tinseltown’s top night, but the simple style was pure elegance on Best Actress nominee Amy Adams
Jennifer Lawrence
A pop of red with some hip-popping peplums, Lawrence added some boldness to the colour palette of Hollywood’s biggest party
Camilla Alves
Swathes of soft pink fabric draped the model wife of Best Actor nominee Matthew McConaughey to sublime effect
Julia Roberts
Award night aficionado Julia Roberts bought sexy black to the Oscars carpet.
Angelina Jolie
Loaded with embellishment, Jolie managed to look sophisticated rather than gaudy in this spangled gown
Naomi Watts
Fresh and feminine, Watts re-energised the T-shirt neckline trend to stunning effect.
