It would be a good thing for everyone if we heard less of Eddie McGuire

EDDIE'S shocking, unthinkably poor taste King Kong Adam Goodes gaffe proves the guy is unfit for the airwaves, argues Ant Sharwood.

SO who wants to be a silly man on air? Eddie McGuire, that's who.

There are no words for the stupidity of this morning's comment by Eddie McGuire. Five days after distinguishing himself by swiftly and whole-heartedly apologising to Adam Goodes on behalf of a young Collingwood fan who called him an ape, Eddie goes and links Goodes to King Kong.

Can you believe that? Talk about putting your big foot in your big mouth.

Eddie said "he made a slip of the tongue remark, that was actually the opposite of what I was thinking at the time," and apologised to Goodes for any hurt he had caused. But surely the horse has bolted.

This isn't one of those predictably outraged columns about some poor person who accidentally said something idiotic. It’s a predictably outraged column about one of the world’s stupidest man with a long history of saying complete and utterly idiotic things.

If McGuire was on Who Wants to be a Millionaire as a contestant, he’d be the guy who gets the first question wrong. If you asked him the capital of England, he’d probably answer "a) Paris" instead of "b) London".

And that, after he worked the London Olympics.  Actually, many people agree the correct phrase is "gibbered away endlessly" in London.

Speaking of Olympics, the last Winter Games at Vancouver 2010 is where Eddie delivered one of his most memorable lines.

It basically panned out like this: In a reference to the outlandish fashion of the male ice skaters, Eddie's co-commentator Mick Molloy said the skaters don’t leave much in the locker room.

McGuire's reply?

"They don’t leave much in the closet either."

Here’s the thing about that reply. It was actually rather witty. That’s not a PC thing to say, but it was.

See, but there are times in the media when you've just got to swallow your tongue. You might have the cleverest thing in the world to say but you've just got to zip your lips.

Eddie seems incapable of this basic filtering process. It is his fatal flaw, and there are probably two reasons for it.

One is that the man known as "Eddie Everywhere" has just too much time across too many media platforms. You're on air that long, you're bound to say some stupid stuff.

The other is that the bloke clearly has a short memory. How – HOW – could he make a joke linking King Kong the musical and Adam Goodes? How could he do that?

Geez, and we haven't even mentioned the infamous Greater Western Sydney falafel gaffe, have we Eddie?

That's three strikes, Eddie.
