AMAZING new dashboard video of a meteor confirms Russia’s reputation as the country that gets all the best stuff from outer space.

RUSSIA gets all the best stuff from space.

First there was the Tunguska event of 1908, in which an asteroid or comet slammed into the Earth’s atmosphere.

According to Wikipedia, the resulting explosion was 1000 times greater than the nuclear bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. It flattened 80 million trees, but occurred in such a remote location, no human fatalities were recorded.

More recently, there was the blast above Chelyabinsk on February 15, 2013.

The 11,000 tonne rock the size of a house speared through the atmosphere at 64,000km/h before it detonated above a remote frozen lake. More than 1000 people were injured in the incident, mainly from glass that shattered and fell from the resulting shock wave.

New video footage shows another spectacular fireball from space: this time a meteor burning up the skies above the port city of Murmansk, in the country’s northwest near the border with Finland.

Conspiracy theorists were quick to suggest that the fireball may have had some military significance, owing to the proximity of a naval base, but Russian astronomer Viktor Troshenkov said the spectacular display may have been part of the Lyrid meteor shower — an annual event lasting from April 16 to 26 in which remnants of a comet pass through the earth’s atmosphere.

“These meteors burn up in the atmosphere, and they are absolutely not dangerous,” NBC quoted Troshenko as saying.
