Parents always blame their children for using the latest technology and amassing the bills and it is often not hard to find business types with their hands on their smartphone when at the airport.

Yet a new study by global information-service company Experian finds that it is mothers with children under the age of five who are the most active on social media, particularly Facebook, Mashable reported.

Mothers with children under five are also twice as likely to post comments on Twitter and Facebook as the general public, the study revealed.

Experian's data was from the Simmons National Consumer Study, which asked the online and offline habits of 25,000 American adults. Experian also aggregated data from Hitwise, which measures website traffic.

Half of mothers with young kids in the study were aged between 25 to 34 years old and the results showed that the age of a mother's child or children significantly impacts her online behaviour.

"Moms (sic) with young kids represent a highly active and digitally sophisticated segment of consumers who are eager to connect with brands and share their experiences through multiple platforms," said Bill Tancer, Experian's general manager of global research.

The study also found that mothers with young kids are generally more likely to shop using mobile devices. Most prefer doing so using an iPad.
