Bond was declared bankrupt in 1992 with personal debts of $1.8bn. He was later stripped of his Australian of the Year title and served four years in prison for fraud. Bond is pictured here leaving Perth Supreme Court in December 1996 after pleading guilty to defrauding Bell Resources of $1bn.

In his most infamous deal, Bond bought the Nine Network from Kerry Packer for $1 billion but sold it back to the billionaire for a fraction of the price just three years later. Beginning his career as a signwriter Alan Bond soon took an interest in the property market, experiencing immense personal wealth and power before spectacularly crashing and burning.
