A Perth teenager is lucky to be alive after a 20m fall down a cliff at a Western Australian tourist hotspot.

Nathan Datson, 15, was at Bells Rapids overlooking the Swan River, northeast of Perth, chasing goats along the cliff when he slipped and fell.

The impact from the 20m plunge broke Nathan’s wrist and elbow and also fractured his skull.

A drone operator was in the area and caught the whole incident on camera.

The teen’s friend, Patrick, was standing by, watching him on the cliff. After seeing his mate slip, he tried to use his phone to call for help, but it was locked.

Thinking quickly, he used Siri to call for Nathan’s father, who then alerted rescue services.

Nathan drifted in and out of consciousness as rescue services worked for two hours to extract him and get him to hospital.

“I fractured my wrist and my elbow, I think I got a bruise to my lungs and a fractured skull,” Nathan said.

“I feel pretty surprised that I’m still alive.”

The terrain was so tough that even rescue volunteers were injured in the pouring rain.

Nathan’s dad, Ben Datson called his survival “a miracle”.

“He found the only protruding rock out the side of the waterfall and he hit it, jamming himself in there,” he said.

“He’d come to for a minute and roar like a lion in pain.”
