Two women have been rescued by a private boat after they were swept out to sea enjoying a float on an inflatable device in Western Australia.

The women were pushed away from the shoreline at Safety Bay by strong winds, according to police, and in distress.

The private boat sprung into action when spotting the women in trouble and escorted them safely back towards land until water police arrived.

It isn’t the first maritime rescue this year off the coast of WA, with two men saved from a capsized boat near Alkimos in August, but a third man died.

Eleven fishermen were also rescued after being trapped on a remote island in WA waters in April, the survivors lasting six days without food or water.

That rescue was after the Australian Maritime Safety Authority had to pull three men who were clutching an Esky to stay afloat from the water off the coast of WA in February.
