Video allegedly shows man dangerously shining blue laser light at police helicopter then trying to hide

Police have released footage of a man hiding in a bizarre spot after allegedly committing a ‘dangerous’ act.

Man charged over laser light pointed at police helicopter

A young man is facing up to seven years behind bars after allegedly repeatedly shining a blue laser light at a police helicopter then trying to hide behind a pillar.

Police have released almost two minutes of footage showing the alleged incident, which happened in Perth’s south at 9.15pm on Thursday.

The helicopter crew tracked the light to a home on Waimea Road in Safety Bay, where officers on the ground arrested a 22-year-old man.

In the video, one officer is heard saying about the accused man: “He’s pretty clever.”

The man is later spotted behind a pillar in a driveway before going towards the back of the house via the carport.

Police officers deployed on the ground later tell those in the helicopter: “Yeah, mate. We’ve got one in custody.”

In response, an officer in the helicopter replies: “Thanks for that, greatly appreciated.”

Police allege a blue laser pointer was found under a bed at the property.

The man has been charged with causing fear or alarm with a laser or light to people in conveyances or others.

He is scheduled to face Rockingham Magistrates Court on May 28.

If convicted, he could face a fine of up to $36,000 and/or a term of imprisonment for up to seven years.

A West Australian Police Force spokesman said it was extremely dangerous to point laser lights at aircraft.

“Laser lights have the potential to illuminate the cabin of an aircraft and cause immediate distress to pilots, who on most occasions need to take immediate evasive action to retain safe control of the aircraft they are flying,” the spokesman said.

“This kind of offence creates a significant danger to those on-board the aircraft.”
