A Qantas flight with 264 passengers flying from Bali to Sydney has diverted to Broome early Tuesday morning after an electric failure.

Flight QF44 left Bali on Monday at 10.40pm local time for Sydney but at 45 minutes past midnight over northern WA the aircraft suffered the electric fault.

It is understood that the aircraft’s autopilot failed while passengers experienced flickering and reduced lighting.

The pilots requested a priority landing and diverted to Broome, making several orbits out to sea before landing safely at 1.45am.

A Qantas spokesperson confirmed the incident.

"A Qantas flight from Denpasar to Sydney diverted to Broome in the early hours of the morning as a result of an electrical fault."

"The aircraft landed safely and we’re working with Broome airport to disembark passengers and re-accommodate them onto alternative flights," the spokesperson said.

However due to the fact that the Airbus A330 aircraft does not operate to Broome there was a delay of almost two hours in getting suitable stairs as well as Border Force and customs staff to handle the passengers.

Qantas says it expects to get all passengers cleared today either on direct flights to Sydney or via Perth.

The airline will send an engineering team to Broome to rectify the problem.
