Police officer dead following diving accident at Trigg Beach in WA
An off-duty police officer has died after a diving accident despite being given first aid on the scene after emergency services were alerted to a diver in distress.
A police officer has died following a diving incident at a Western Australia beach.
Emergency services were called to Trigg Beach about 10.30am on Tuesday following reports of a diver in distress.
Water Police, Police Air Wing, Marine Rescue, City of Stirling Surf Lifesaving and St John WA were called to the scene.
The woman in her 40s was retrieved from the water, but despite first aid efforts was declared dead at the scene.
A WA Police spokesperson confirmed the woman was a member of the police force.
“It is with a heavy heart we confirm the diver is a sworn member (First Class Constable) of the WA Police Force, who was off duty at the time,” the spokesperson said.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are extended to her family and colleagues.
“Attending to life and death situations is a daily reality for first responders but incidents involving one of our own are especially difficult for our officers.”
The spokesperson said the Health, Welfare and Safety Division would support those “impacted by this tragedy”.
“The family of the deceased has requested privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” the spokesperson said.
