Man weighing 118kg stretchered from popular tourist lookout by emergency services

Emergency services have pulled off an exhausting rescue of a 118kg man from a popular tourist spot which took all night.

A man weighing 118kg has been carried down from WA’s Bluff Knoll after suffering severe leg cramps just 400m from the peak.

Emergency services from Albany SES worked all night to get the man to safety, travelling 2.6km back to the carpark.

Albany SES Local Manager Bob Boyes told 6PR carrying the immobilised man took all night and required the help of other hikers.

“We got the call probably just after 6pm and I know the team that went out got back at 4:40am,” Mr Boyes said.

It is the second rescue in the area in just two days.

“It’s a numbers game with stretcher carry outs and in this case it was a matter of getting people from Denmark, Mt Barker and a few fireys from Albany to carry this gentleman, who was about 118kg, down from the top, pretty much.”

Bluff Knoll near Albany is the highest point of the Stirling ranges and attracts plenty of visitors, particularly during summer.

It is the second rescue in the area in just two days.

“What I’d like to see is more people thinking about what they’re doing and making sure they’re prepared and up to it,” Mr Boyes said.
