The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) confirmed reports a male surfer was bitten by a shark at around 8.45am on Monday.
The man was surfing at the Boat Ramp Surfing Spot near Gnarabup, about 280km south of Perth.
A St John’s Ambulance spokesman said the man, aged in his 20s, was transported from the Margaret River Hospital to Bunbury Hospital.
He was reportedly in a stable condition with non life-threatening injuries.
The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has closed beaches between Gas Bay to Margaret River Mouth, and surfers are advised to take caution in the area.
DPIRD is working with local authorities to co-ordinate responses, but anyone who sees a shark is urged to report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.
