Investigation underway as man found dead in cell at remote WA prison
An investigation is underway after a man was found dead in his cell at a remote maximum security prison.
An Aboriginal man has died while in custody at a rural prison, only a year after a separate prisoner was found dead in the same jail’s kitchen.
The Indigenous man, 41, was found unresponsive inside his cell by staff at Albany Regional Prison shortly after 1pm on Thursday.
Prison staff provided first aid until paramedics arrived at the remote jail before transferring the man to the Albany Health Campus.
Tragically, he was unable to be revived.
In a statement, the WA Department of Justice said police would investigate the death, as is mandatory for deaths in custody.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The death comes a year after a 29-year-old man was found unconscious in the change rooms of the prison’s kitchen about 4pm on May 16.
Located southeast of Perth, Albany Regional Prison is the only maximum security prison in regional WA and currently homes about 300 inmates.
