The family of a driver suspected of deliberately driving down the wrong side of a major highway – killing himself and three others in a horrific crash – have broken their silence for the first time.

In a heartfelt statement, the family of Rabin Rawal said the incident was a “heartbreaking tragedy” and extended their sympathies to the families who lost loved ones as a result of the crash.

Police believe Mr Rawal, 43, made a conscious decision to drive a RAV4 northeast in the southbound lane on the Leach Highway in Cloverdale, near Perth Airport, about 3.40am on January 13.

He then collided head-on with a taxi.

The taxi driver, 58-year-old Senduku Tesema, and an 81-year-old mother and her 56-year-old daughter, all died alongside Mr Rawal.

Police are investigating whether or not the crash was a murder-suicide attempt.

An SD card retrieved from Rawal’s car revealed he had been speeding through nearby streets prior to the crash.

On Monday, Mr Rawal’s family issued a statement where they said: “We would like to extend our deepest condolences for all the families involved in this heartbreaking tragedy.”

“We trust that you can find strength and comfort surrounded by those who love and care for you,” their statement continued.

“We request that our privacy is respected and we are given time to grieve for our loss.“

Mr Tesema’s 18-year old daughter told 7News her father was a man who was “loved by all.”

“He was the funniest, most caring man,” Eyerusalem Achamyeleh told reporters.

Ms Achamyeleh is hoping to take her father’s body back to Ethiopia and has been fundraising to cover the cost.

Mr Tesema’s former employer Swan Taxis will also hold a fundraiser to support his family.
