Elderly woman allegedly assaulted during violent carjacking forced to complete Covid-19 isolation alone

An elderly woman who was allegedly bashed during a violent carjacking has been dealt another humiliating blow.

An elderly woman was allegedly so severely assaulted, she lost some teeth and suffered a dislocated shoulder during a carjacking while waiting for a Covid-19 test at Royal Perth Hospital.

To add insult to injury, after the 69-year-old woman was discharged from hospital, she was then forced to isolate alone at her home until her mandatory quarantine period was completed.

The woman, known only as Kathy, had recently returned from the Northern Territory and tested negative to coronavirus, but was waiting in her car for her day 12 test when she was allegedly attacked on Saturday.

Her car door was open when a woman allegedly yanked her out, threatened to kill her, then bashed the victim and stole her car.

“Bashed, kicked me, lost teeth. I’m bruised and battered. She stole my car, my phone, everything that was in my car – she took it,” Kathy said on 6PR radio on Thursday.

Kathy spent Saturday night and all day Sunday at the hospital, then was sent home and told to isolate for a further four hours to complete her quarantine despite testing negative for the virus.

“I had just under four hours to wait until I was out of isolation and I wasn’t allowed to have a family member stay with me,” she said.

“I can’t get into a car now – I’m so frightened.

“Once I get there and the door is starting to close I just panic.”

Premier Mark McGowan offered his sympathies to Kathy, but did not apologise for his government’s tough Covid-19 stance.

“It’s very, very difficult and no doubt very, very sad for her.

“I sympathise enormously with anyone who is a victim of a crime like that.

“But obviously decisions have to be made to keep the public and the state safe.

“We’ve gotten through the last two years by doing difficult things in difficult circumstances.”

Kathy said she was disappointed by the situation and still did not have her car back or her phone.

“It’s just not good enough. You’re doing what you’re supposed to do … and then this happens and then you get no support afterwards,” she said.
