An elderly pensioner who was brutally bashed and allegedly slashed with a broken car mirror after he investigated a disturbance outside his home has died in a Perth hospital.

Emiliano Lombardi, 84, was attacked on the lawn of his East Cannington home on August 16 and had spent the past fortnight at Royal Perth Hospital.

The grandfather was taken out of the intensive care unit last week but he died overnight.

Police said on Tuesday that the Homicide Squad had taken over the investigation and charges against Quade Karsum Jones, 28, could be upgraded.

Mr Lombardi’s family, who never left his side in hospital, told Nine News he died peacefully.

His son said he was “broken”, while his daughter said the past few days had been awful.

Premier Mark McGowan said he was “deeply saddened” by Mr Lombardi’s death.

“Mr Lombardi was the victim of a cowardly, unprovoked and disgusting attack,” Mr McGowan said.

“Nobody, especially our elderly and most vulnerable, should have to suffer like this, nor be afraid outside their own home.

“I want to offer my sincere sympathies to his family and loved ones, in what must be an extremely difficult time.

“My own parents are approaching Mr Lombardi’s age - I can only imagine how his family are feeling today.”

Police Minister Michelle Roberts described Mr Lombardi’s death as “absolutely tragic and senseless”.

“My heart goes out to his family,” she told reporters.

“I think we were all very hopeful when we heard that Mr Lombardi was conscious again, and we were very hopeful of a recovery. Unfortunately, he’s now died.”

The community had rallied behind Mr Lombardi and his family, including supporting a GoFundMe page and tradespeople offering to refurbish his home.

Neighbours described Mr Lombardi as “a hell of a nice guy” who shared the vegetables he grew in his garden.

Days after the alleged incident, other crimes were identified as being linked, which all happened between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

Jones is accused of punching and robbing a man in his 20s in Cannington, indecently assaulting a woman in her 40s in East Cannington, and using a metal sign to hit a woman in her 20s in Beckenham.

That evening, there was also a series of graffiti damage, a brick was thrown through a house window, and damage was done to fence panels and two letterboxes.

Jones is accused of committing some of that criminal damage, while a 24-year-old man has been charged over the majority of those incidents, as well as some other drug and weapon offences.

Jones is next scheduled to face Perth Magistrates Court on Friday.
