A drink driver who fled after he struck and killed a teenage pedestrian when his car hit a traffic island in Midvale has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

A drink driver who fled after he struck and killed a teenage pedestrian when his car hit a traffic island in Midvale has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Biju Paulose, 49, was driving his BMW SUV along Farrall Road about 6.25pm on July 31 last year when his car mounted a median strip and hit three teenage pedestrians who were waiting to cross the road.

Kayden McPhee, 15, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. A 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries but survived the collision.

A 12-year-old boy was unharmed.

Appearing in Stirling Garden Magistrate’s Court today, Paulose pleaded guilty to a string of charges including unlawful killing and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm under the influence of alcohol.

Paulose also admitted failing to stop after an incident occasioning death and grievous bodily harm and failing to report the incident to police.

A pre-sentence and psychiatric report was ordered before Paulose is sentenced on July 5. His bail was renewed.

Outside court, Kayden’s family told 6PR reporter Simon Etheridge they were calling for a “long sentence”.

“Our grandson didn’t get a chance at life, he was only 15,” his grandmother Rhonda McPhee said.

Lee-Anne McPhee, Kayden’s aunt, said: “He left Kayden and that boy on the side of the road like a dog, he didn’t stop and render any assistance whatsoever, the whole story is just heartbreaking.

“My nephew did not deserve that, we replay that scene over and over in our head. A 48-year-old family man chose to drink and drive and then hit and run, and leave him. It hurts,” she said.
