Homicide detectives are tonight questioning a man after the discovery of a body amongst debris inside a burnt out unit in Tuart Hill.

The grim find was made about 90 minutes after firefighters were called to the unit complex, on the corner of Wanneroo Road and North Beach Drive, about 9am this morning.

The unit remains an active crime scene, with arson investigators and forensic police scouring for clues and bagging up evidence.

Police say a man came to the attention of firefighters soon after the blaze broke out, when he went to the rear of the burning unit and started filming with his mobile phone.

It is understood he was later arrested. No charges have been laid.

Officers are analysing security footage from nearby homes and businesses in an effort to piece together what happened.

The blaze ripped through the three-bedroom home within minutes, with police confirming the property was “totally destroyed”.

Several neighbours said they did not know the man who lived in the home.

They heard windows exploding and saw smoke seeping into surrounding units.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire just before 9am.

Bidur Lohani, whose unit backs onto the ruined property, said he told his wife to call firefighters after noticing smoke coming from the house.

He said he grabbed a brick and tried to smash a window but was unsuccessful.

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he was shocked to hear of the tragic discovery.

“It’s quite sad to be honest, it’s not good news, especially when you’re a neighbour,” he said.
