Anti-Burrup Hub protesters target WA parliament

Anti-Woodside protesters have again used yellow paint to call out the energy giant over a major gas hub project.

Disrupt Burrup Hub action at WA parliament

Protesters opposing a major energy project in Western Australia’s Pilbara have struck again in Perth in an effort to draw attention to their cause.

A Disrupt Burrub Hub member spray-painted the Woodside Energy logo over the front doors of WA’s parliament building about 8am on Wednesday.

She was spoken to by WA Police, with Disrupt Burrup Hub organisers reporting she has since been charged with a count of criminal damage.

The spray-painted logos were removed by about 8.45am.

The action coincides with a visit from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who is holding the first federal cabinet meeting in Western Australia at Port Hedland on Tuesday.

In a statement, Disrupt Burrup Hub said it was targeting the state government over allowing Woodside “to destroy culture and climate with toxic emissions from the Burrup Hub, exchanging generous tax benefits and political access for sizeable donations”.

The group is opposed to Woodside’s Burrup Hub development on the Burrup Peninsula, which it claims will cause untold environmental damage and threaten the Murujuga rock art, some of the oldest petroglyphs in the world.

Woodside has either been the primary or secondary target of the group’s ire in similar protests over the last few weeks.

On February 13, Trent Rojahn used a fire extinguisher to blast the glass front doors and windows of the Woodside building in Perth’s CBD with yellow paint.

In January 19, Joana Partyka sprayed the Woodside logo over the Perspex covering the Frederick McCubbin painting Down on His Luck inside the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

The 37-year-old was fined $2637 and ordered to pay $4821.08 in compensation to the gallery when she appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on February 10.

Woodside has previously commented while it supports the rights of people to protest peacefully and lawfully, the company works closely with traditional owners to demonstrate respect for the culture and values of the Indigenous communities where it is active.
