The Block 2023 episode 30 recap: Leah finally realises the truth about her toxic bestie Kristy

It’s taken long enough, but one team has finally started to see how damaging their friendship with Kristy and Brett is and make moves to extricate themselves.

Biggest winners of The Block so far

It’s looking like Leah and Ash might pull themselves out of the jaws of reality TV villainy just in time.

The pair have been steadfast buddies of Kristy and Brett since the season started, but just like during Covid, when people watched in horror as that one friend became a QANON anti-vax nutcase, Leah is beginning to see what she thought was just some snide gossiping is actually full-blown conspiracy theorising from her South Australian pals.

It started after Kristy went nuts following kitchen week judging, accusing sisters Liberty and Eliza of receiving special treatment and extra help, for reasons she doesn’t bother explaining.

Eliza stepped up to defend herself, showing she’s much more than a loveable ditz, but for Kristy and Brett that was just more evidence that the sisters are fake.

“Isn’t it amazing how Eliza’s ‘I’m so lovely, I’m so go-with-the-flow, I’m just a girl’ went out the window tonight and her character was completely different,” Kristy says. “I can’t be f--ked with that fake personality.”

She later tells producers “for me, personally, we’ve got nothing to lose. Let’s just f--kin’ burn it down”.

But for Leah and Ash, Eliza’s decision to stand up for herself is a wake-up call.

“I was sick that they were upset, I was sick about the confrontation. I felt deeply uncomfortable,” Leah says.

“It’s all coming to light for me that the jokes and banter are not that to other people and I think I even said to Kristy ‘I’m quite concerned that we’ve become a foursome and a package deal here. I know you and Brett share some strong opinions. Ash and I don’t really believe those things so I don’t really want to engage in that kind of conversation’.

“I’ve been reeling about this since Sunday after seeing someone visibly upset and it’s made me self-reflect and go ‘something is wrong here’.”

It’s something Eliza is prepared to give Leah the benefit of the doubt on. Two days after the dramatic post-judging confrontation Leah asks Eliza to clear the air.

“Something that I’ve been wanting to kind of, I guess, be very clear on, is just because of our relationship with them, does not mean we share the same opinions,” Leah tells her.

Eliza agrees to have a further conversation the next day.

“She’s genuinely thinking wow, her morals and ethics aren’t aligning with what she’s been doing and saying,” Eliza says.

“I genuinely think that she just didn’t know a lot of what was going on. She was caught up in a little bubble and people weren’t telling her things because she was Kristy and Brett’s best friend. Kristy and Brett are not coming across well and she’s realised, her eyes have been opened.”

Meanwhile, Kristy is fuming Leah and Ash didn’t support them in their conspiracy theories when it all kicked off after kitchen judging.

“For some reason Leah made it about herself in some way,” she says about the post-

mortem the four had following the blow up. “It was just annoying because the opinions which I know they had, they didn’t speak to and I was like ‘oh, you guys aren’t the people that I thought you were, because you spoke a lot of talk two days ago and now we’re here and, nothing,” she says.

As all this drama bubbles away, the teams are working on their master ensuite bathrooms.

Kyle and Leslie are once again featuring curves, this time in the form of the entrance to the hidden double shower, along with double separate sinks.

Leah and Ash are creating a cave-like curved shower room with arched door.

Kristy and Brett, who are yet to win a room, are saving pennies by eschewing the Venetian plaster they’ve installed everywhere else and going with a double shower, fluted glass shower screen and kitkat tiles.

Eliza and Liberty’s first room with their new builders will feature a raked ceiling, gold fixtures and what they think is genius – foot niches in the shower for leg shaving purposes.

Steph and Gian have a long shower bench seat and bizarrely, mirrors in front of their windows in what is destined to lose them points with the judges, despite Steph’s constant parroting of the refrain “I’m playing with form and function”.
