Second investigation into Melbourne mayor
NEW allegations of sexual harassment have been lodged against Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle — prompting a second investigation ordered by the state’s health minister.
NEW allegations of sexual harassment levelled at Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle have prompted a second investigation ordered by the state’s health minister.
Jill Hennessy ordered the probe after a third woman came forward on Wednesday with fresh claims the mayor had allegedly touched her.
“I have asked the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to immediately commission an independent investigation into these matters,” Ms Hennessy said on Wednesday.
“Until the investigation is concluded, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment,” she said.
Fairfax Media reports the woman told investigators Mr Doyle allegedly touched her leg under the table and made offensive remarks to her at a Melbourne Health awards ceremony in June 2016.
Mr Doyle was the chairman of the Melbourne Health board at the time. “Melbourne Health is supporting the family of a staff member since becoming aware of an incident at a 2016 function,” the health service said in a statement on Wednesday.
Mr Doyle has taken leave from his role as chair of the Melbourne Health board, as well as from the council, but he maintains his innocence.
“As I have said previously, I strongly deny the suggestion that I behaved in an inappropriate manner,” he said in a statement.
Mr Doyle is on leave until Dr Freckleton’s inquiry is complete.
