Police examining claims against former Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle
Former Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle is facing allegations from six women after an inquiry upheld sexual misconduct allegations last year.
Several women have spoken to police alleging sexual assault claims levelled against former Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.
In a statement Victoria Police said: “Victoria Police has spoken with a number of women in relation to historical sexual assault matters. At this time it is only in the preliminary stages and matter is under assessment.”
Mr Doyle was hospitalised after a City of Melbourne inquiry into claims of sexual misconduct last year upheld complaints by one current councillor and one former councillor.
The Australian reports Victoria Police are looking into historic allegations.
News.com.au has approached Victoria Police and Mr Doyle’s lawyer for comment. Mr Doyle has strenuously and consistently denied any wrongdoing.
News.com.au does not suggest Mr Doyle is involved in any wrongdoing, just that several allegations have been made against him.
Mr Doyle has not been questioned by police in relation to the allegations and officers have yet to decide whether to launch a full investigation
The former Lord Mayor and one time Victorian Liberal Party leader resigned from his role at the City of Melbourne early last year.
An independent report by Ian Freckelton QC found Mr Doyle had touched colleague Tessa Sullivan’s breast and touched colleague Cathy Oke’s thigh. Mr Doyle has lodged an appeal to the Victorian Supreme Court challenging the report.
Current Lord Mayor Sally Cap said she was unaware of the police matter when asked on ABC Radio this morning.
