Opposition Leader Matthew Guy hits back at Daniel Andrews’ new minister picks

Victoria’s Opposition Leader has taken aim at some of Daniel Andrews’ cabinet picks, saying one represents a “revolving door” of politicians.

Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has taken aim at some of Daniel Andrews’ picks for cabinet ministers after the resignation of four of the Labor Party’s most senior politicians.

Mr Guy made the retort on Monday morning after the MPs’ new portfolios were confirmed at a party caucus on Saturday.

The state’s new Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan was in a particular line of fire after her tenure so far as Transport Infrastructure Minister.

“You know, the Metro tunnels running out of money, the West Gate tunnel is running out of money and the person who’s presiding over those two disasters just got promoted to the Deputy Premier,” he said.

“That’s the priority of Daniel Andrews and the Labor Party of Victoria. How about we get those projects under control?”

Mr Guy went on to question whether Ms Allan’s handling of the state’s mammoth infrastructure projects meant she was deserving of the promotion.

“We’ve got to manage these projects, they’re good projects, they’re big projects, but it doesn’t mean we can throw money at them,” he said.

“It means you’ve got a budget and you stick to it — that’s what being a responsible government does — but the irresponsibility of this government leads to someone being promoted.”

Shadow Health Minister Georgie Crozier doubled-down on Mr Guy’s doubt, saying Mary-Anne Thomas being the fourth Health Minister in four years showed a “revolving door”.

“They need to fix the health crisis and I don’t think (Ms Thomas) has the experience and expertise to do so,” she said.

“Just because Daniel Andrews has changed a name from the ministerial portfolio rank doesn’t mean they’ve got any answers to these really critical issues that every single Victorian deserves to have fixed.”

The remarks come as five new members were sworn into Mr Andrews’ reshuffled cabinet on Monday afternoon.

Ms Allan said she woke up “with butterflies” on Monday morning ahead of becoming the state’s second in command.

“Regardless of your background, postcode, gender, under this state … we are a community and a society that is inclusive,” she said.

The revamped cabinet now includes 14 women and eight men — the most gender diverse of any state in Australia.
