Daniel Andrews’ ambitious plan to prop up Victoria’s farmers and producers

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has promised to deliver the state’s farmers a massive leg-up if he is re-elected.

Daniel Andrews has promised Victoria’s farmers and producers millions of dollars to promote their goods if he’s re-elected as Premier.

Mr Andrews made the pledge on Monday during a visit to Brown Brothers Winery in the state’s northeast.

The plan would include $2 million worth of grants to support small agribusinesses and $5 million for a “wine to the world” program.

This would also include a new Victorian wine strategy.

It comes as part of a $30 million total package centred on small-scale support for producers and farmers.

Also included is $10 million to support Victorian distilleries to establish and upgrade their facilities.

The awarding of more than $5 million worth of scholarships up to $10,000 is also planned to enable hospitality workers to upskill, creating more dining experiences across our state.

Fifty per cent of that $5m funding is guaranteed for businesses in regional Victoria in a bid to help recruit and retain staff.

A further $3 million would be set aside to support farmers’ safety and wellbeing, including $900,000 for a National Centre for Farmer Health.

Mr Andrews said the promise was partially aimed at keeping and growing jobs in regional areas.

“Victoria is home to the most incredible fresh produce – and the most talented growers and makers,” he said.

“Whether it is grants to support the expansion of business, grants to support the formation of new businesses, as well as dealing with some of those workforce pressures, that’s exactly what the industry has been calling out for, and it’s what we’re offering.”

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said the funds would help improve the industries’ position on the national stage.

“Victoria is home to some of the best local producers in the country and we’ll back them to take the next step, boosting tourism experiences and showcasing regional Victoria to the world,” Mr Dimopoulos said.
