Victoria records four new local Covid-19 cases as border shut with southeast Queensland

Brett Sutton has revealed just 10 Victorians positive for Covid during the latest outbreak were fully vaccinated despite others being eligible.

Victoria cases decline amid calls for higher vaccine uptake

Just 10 Victorians who tested positive for Covid-19 during the state’s latest outbreak were vaccinated against the virus, Brett Sutton has revealed.

A snapshot of the 204 coronavirus cases in Victoria between July 12 and 28 showed only 10 were fully vaccinated against the virus, the chief health officer said.

“Of those 10 positive cases who were fully vaccinated, none of them were hospitalised, all were either completely without symptoms or had mild symptoms,” Professor Sutton said.

Of those 204 people who caught the virus, 29 were eligible for a vaccine but had not received the shot.

“We know it reduces your risk of getting Covid but especially of getting very sick from Covid,” Professor Sutton said of the vaccine.

Eight Covid patients are now being treated in hospitals, with three in intensive care, including one person on a ventilator.

The state’s health department confirmed the new local cases about 8.30am, and said they were all linked to existing outbreaks.

In another positive sign, the health department said the new cases were in isolation for their entire infectious period.

Two of those cases were household contacts of Ms Frankie’s patrons, acting Covid-19 commander Naomi Bromley said at a press conference on Sunday.

One case was a known social contact connected to the Young and Jackson’s outbreak and one was a household contact of someone who attended the Wallabies rugby match at AAMI Park.

About 20 residents living in a Richmond apartment building have been told to quarantine for 14 days, with some moved to hotel quarantine.

Ms Bromley said all residents have returned negative test results so far.

Victoria has recorded more than 200 cases linked to the two outbreaks that jumped the border from Sydney’s deadly Delta cluster – one from a team of Sydney removalists who transited through the state and the other from a family who returned to Melbourne’s north from a NSW red zone.

The state recorded no new cases in hotel quarantine on Sunday, with the number of active cases in Victoria at 161 – down from 180 on Saturday.

In comes as chief health officer Brett Sutton slammed the border shut with southeast Queensland following their local outbreak.

Professor Sutton declared the 11 local government areas of Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Logan, Noosa, Redland, Scenic Rim, Somerset and Sunshine Coast as red zones.

It means people in those regions, other than Victorian residents returning home, cannot enter the state from 8pm on Saturday.

Returning Victorians will need to obtain a red zone permit and then quarantine for 14 days when they arrive.
