The moderate warnings extends across Central, North Central, North East, South West, Wimmera, South and West Gippsland regions, as well as Melbourne.

The epidemic thunderstorm asthma forecast runs during the Victorian grass pollen season, which is typically between October 1 and December 31 each year.

Thunderstorm asthma events can be fatal.

In 2016, 10 Victorians lost their lives to a catastrophic event in Melbourne, with thousands also suffering respiratory problems.

Those who suffer from hayfever or asthma are warned to be extra cautious outside during high-pollen days, as the mixture of high pollen, strong winds and rain can trigger severe asthma symptoms.

Shortly before a thunderstorm, tiny pollen grains can become swept up in gusts of wind an dburst, which may get caught in a person’s lungs and cause breathing difficulties. Even those without asthma or hayfever may experience brethin issues, including wheezing, chest tightness, coughing and shortness of breath.

Those at risk are encouraged to stay inside during thunderstorms and closing doors and windows. It’s also best to avoid going outside during strong gusts of winds that appear before a storm. Those using air conditioners during warmer weather are encouraged to switch their setting to recirculate to prevent pollen coming inside.
