A newly opened floating nightclub has been destroyed after an early morning blaze.

A Victoria Police spokesman told NCA NewsWire emergency services were called to North Wharf Rd about 4.30am on Tuesday after onlookers on the Bolte Bridge spotted flames.

Crews manage to extinguish the fire in six minutes and nobody was on the boat when crews arrived, he said.

However, images taken from the scene in Tuesday show significant damage to the boat with parts of the roof destroyed.

The boat is understood to be the floating nightclub ATET, which opened late last year.

Staff and owners were emotional as they gathered at the scene on Tuesday.

The floating nightclub had showcased a sold-out show on Saturday and was docked when the fire started.

Police will investigate the cause of the fire and anyone with information is urged to contact Crimestoppers.
