The owners of the house that crashed down a hill in an apparent landslide onVictoria’s Mornington Peninsula, leaving one man in hospital, say they are grateful no one was killed.

They have also revealed a landslip from a property above them had affected their last week.

Emergency services were called to a property on View Point Rd in McCrae – about 59km south of Melbourne – about 8.45am on Tuesday after a landslide caused the building to crash down.

The building collapsed and fell onto its side, encased with trees and shrubbery.

“We are very grateful that nobody died today,” owner Nick Moran said in a written statement.

“Our thoughts are with the injured Mornington (Peninsula) Shire employee who we understand is in a stable condition.”

Mr Moran said a landslip from a property higher up the cliffs had affected their property last week.

“On that occasion family members were in the house and fortunately no one was injured or killed,” he said.

“The subsequent slip from the same property is very significant.”

State Emergency Service incident controller Mark Daw said one house had been destroyed and three other homes had been damaged Tuesday’s landslide, one seriously, while seven homes had been evacuated.

“There’s quite a considerable amount of slip that’s happened up there,” he said.

He said the SES had responded to smaller landslides in the area before “but nothing of this scale”.

He said geotechnical engineers were investigating.

Resident Tanina Osborne said on social media that she had just completed a swim when she heard an “almighty tumble” from behind.

She turned around and watched the house crashing and sliding down the hill.

“There’s been a massive landslide in McCrae,” she said in a video uploaded on Facebook.

“We heard this almighty tumble, like a truck load of rock had been dumped on the ground. It turns out it was a house.”

Another resident, Kim, told 3AW the house was “destroyed” by the collapse.

“It is unbelievable,” she said.

“Destroyed, it has slid down (and) landed into the back of another house.”

A Frankston man in his 50s has suffered a broken leg as a result of the house collapsing.

He was treated by paramedics on the scene and was taken to Frankston hospital in a stable condition.

VicEmergency has issued a warning for residents to stay away from the area, as the slope may continue to move for hours or days afterwards.

There is currently no risk to the foreshore camping area.

Point Nepean Road will remain closed for at least 24 hours and it could be a some time before evacuees could return home.
