Melburnians emerge from virus lockdown, flocking to cafes, shopping centres and roads

They’ve spent more than 100 days in lockdown. But now Melburnians are on the loose.

Melburnians have gone ‘manic’ on their first weekend out of lockdown in more than 100 days.

People have flocked to restaurants, bars, shopping centres and parks as they enjoy long overdue catch-ups with friends and family.

Chris Richards said he was loving his newfound freedom.

“It’s been manic,” he said.

“The cafes are full and the roads are really busy as everyone gets out and about.”

The Coburg resident said despite the crowds, most people were adhering to social distancing and wearing masks.

“That’s just a given now,” he said.

Mr Richards said he was spending Saturday having a few beers while watching the Derby Day races with his extended family.

Melburnians have also shared their excitement on social media.

The hashtag #MelbourneAwakens is trending on Twitter, as users share their joy at being let out of the house.

Melburnians’ ability to leave their homes came as Victoria recorded its third day of zero cases this week, which has become known as a donut day.
