Melbourne to get new train stations as part of Suburban Rail Loop

The Melbourne suburbs that will get new train stations have been announced, as the city’s new $50 billion rail loop moves forward.

The route for the new $50 billion Suburban Rail Loop in Melbourne has been confirmed, with the Andrews Government announcing the suburbs that will get new stations.

Today Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed the preferred route for the much anticipated 90km rail loop would run from Cheltenham to Werribee and connect every metropolitan train line in-between.

New underground stations will be built in Burwood and Monash University in Clayton, along with four new interchanges at Cheltenham, Glen Waverly, Clayton and Box Hill.

The design and delivery of the massive project will be led by the Suburban Rail Loop Authority, which will be headed by chief executive Nick Foa and is set to start work this week.

“This dedicated new authority will ensure the biggest public transport project in our state’s history becomes a reality,” Mr Andrews said.

“The Suburban Rail Loop will better connect Victorians to jobs, education and each other. We promised to get on with it, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

The team is set to being talks with local government, universities and other key stakeholders about where the new stations will be located in the precincts.

Construction is set to be begin by 2022.

As the project is still in very early stages, Mr Andrews said it was unclear how many properties would have to be acquired to build the new stations.

But he said his government would seek to “minimise the amount of impact on local residents”.

When the loop is finished, it is expected to be able to carry 400,000 passengers a day, cut congestion across the entire transport network and remove thousands of cars off the roads.

The Government also stated the loop will create more than 20,000 construction jobs, with 2000 apprentices, trainees and cadets to be employed under the Government’s Major Projects Skills Guarantee.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the new line was the future of the city’s transport network.

“Right now we’re delivering the West Gate Tunnel, removing level crossings, upgrading suburban roads, getting on with the Metro Tunnel — the Suburban Rail Loop is the next step in the future of our transport network,” Ms Allan said.
