A man has died and two police officers have been seriously injured in a horror smash in Victoria’s north.

The collision, which killed the yet-to-be-identified man on impact, happened on the Murray Valley Hwy at Strathmerton on Tuesday.

It’s believed the van the man was driving and a police car carrying the two officers collided on the highway at the Stokes Rd intersection around midday.

Paramedics treated the two male officers at the scene for serious upper body injuries and both were flown to hospital in a serious condition.

A constable aged in his 30s was flown to The Alfred hospital, while a detective sergeant aged in his 60s was taken to Shepparton Hospital.

The van driver was the sole occupant of that vehicle.

The officers were on patrol at the time of the crash and there is no evidence to indicate they were in pursuit of the van.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have attended the scene to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Any witnesses, anyone with dashcam or anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
