Man dies, woman hospitalised in Highett house fire

Arson squad detectives are working to determine the cause of a fire that tragically killed a man and hospitalised a woman in Melbourne.

A man has died and a woman has been hospitalised after a house fire in Melbourne’s southeast overnight.

Emergency services were called to a Chesterville Road home in Highett about 7.50pm on Thursday to reports of a building fire.

A man was found unresponsive inside the property after firefighters extinguished the blaze.

He could not be revived and tragically died at the scene.

Senior Constable Adam West said a woman aged in her 70s was also home at the time of the fire and was taken to hospital for treatment with minor injuries.

He said police had set up a crime scene at the property and arson squad officers would attend on Friday morning to try and determine the cause of the blaze.

It’s not yet known if the fire was suspicious or not.
