A man has been arrested and charged after chilling security footage captured the moment a man allegedly stole a new mum’s car with her baby boy inside.
Dean Anderson, 46, was charged with several offences, including kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle, committing an indictable offence while on bail and unlicensed driving, over the alleged incident at Keysborough in Melbourne’s southwest on Tuesday.
Lawyers for Mr Anderson appeared in court on Wednesday while he remained isolated in his cell due to concerns he had Covid-19.
Mr Anderson is accused of stealing a car that had an 11-month-old boy inside.
Police will allege the little boy’s mother had briefly left the vehicle and had the engine running when Mr Anderson took the car and sped off, prompting a frantic search for the youngster.
“As you can imagine, when their 11-month-old baby is missing, they are very distressed,” Inspector Fiona Halford told reporters at the time.
The boy was located “safe and well” in Cranbourne a few hours later before Mr Anderson was arrested and charged.
The boy has since been reunited with his family.
Mr Anderson did not apply for bail and will appear in court again on Thursday.
