’Homemade bomb’ explodes in alleged kidnapper’s hands in Melbourne

A man made a miraculous escape after a homemade explosive device blew up in the hands of his alleged kidnapper, police say.

An explosive device has detonated in the hands of an alleged kidnapper as he threatened a 29-year-old man with the homemade bomb, police say.

A group of men allegedly took the 29-year-old from a venue in Cranbourne last month to a Dandenong property, where he was allegedly threatened with explosive devices.

Police believe a homemade explosive blew up in the hands of a 38-year-old alleged kidnapper, who was later dropped off at a hospital with critical injuries.

The alleged kidnapping victim managed to escape and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The 38-year-old man has now been charged with false imprisonment, without approval sell or use unauthorised explosives, possess firearm when firearm prohibition order applies, handle stolen goods, possess body armour and without approval manufacture and store unauthorised explosives.

He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on October 18.
